In an era of immense houses, the famous “McMansions,” with perhaps several SUV’s in the driveway,
there is a need for a different idea about living. Just as a small car can be economical with fuel and still
comfortable and fun to drive, a small house can be easy and inexpensive to maintain and still be a
comfortable and attractive place to live. The houses that are presented on this website are designed for
efficient and comfortable living at a small scale. All the houses have less than 1200 square feet of living
area, and they are intended for occupancy by one person, a couple, or perhaps a couple and a small
child. They can be used as guesthouses, vacation cabins, studios, or as a primary residence. They may
be built on the same property as a larger house, or by themselves in a remote location.
Comfort and intimacy are the keys to their design. The houses are small, but their spaces are generous
in their use of space. Each room is conceived to work effectively and comfortably for its intended use.
Some of the houses use built-in cabinets, shelves, or cupboard to achieve efficiency, but many
accomplish the task by providing well laid-out room for standard furniture.
Although they are small, the houses may not be inexpensive. The same house plan may be able to be
executed in several ways and provided with fewer or more features, much like an automobile. Finish
materials can be changes to make the cost fit your budget, If you need a basement, you may build your
house with a basement; if you wish a fireplace or a wood stove, you may include it in your plans.
So far there is one model, the Model A. As time goes on, more models will be added, as well as
